The 220SEb Coupé was shown to the press at Stuttgart in February 1961 on occasion of the re-opening of the Daimler-Benz Museum. It was also the year that Mercedes celebrated its 75 years of existense. The car made his public debut a month later at the 1961 Geneva Show were it had to compete with the E-type from Jaguar. The 220SEb Convertible appeared the first time at the "61-Show" in September in Frankfurt.

111´s soul, shape, elegance and attraction

Attracts buyers

The timeless design attracts buyers. A style and quality that still are admired in the 21 st century as it did in the 60s. Whether you like it or not, your car become easily in the centre of attention.

Powerful engines

With powerful Six- and V8-cylinder engines there are no problems to follow todays tempo in traffic. Bosch fuel injection system gives a smooth driving. Power steering (not MB 220SE) and disc brakes allow easy drive. Also the four-speed automatic gearbox works smoothly.

In Autosport 1961, John Bolster said, "The engine revs very freely, and is remarkably smooth at a full 6000 rpm. It is not completely silent, the camshaft drive being just audible, but it is certainly unusually quit for such a high efficency unit"

Buying

If you have a fairly generous budget and a lot of time, you possible buy a car to restore. Spare parts are no problems, but prices may be high.

Otherwise the advise is to look for a complete car, with few things to fix.

What to look for

Corrosion. The most costly to take into account. Check underbodies. Especially if the rust protection are dry and cracked. On the bodywork, rust is first visible above the headlights and inside the light pods. Wings are expensive. Sills are hidden by chrome trim. Lift the carpets. Check rear wheels arches.

Corroded bumpers are extremely expensive to re-chroming or replace, but stainless steel is available and cheaper.

Mechanical parts are no problems, as components are long-lived and replaceable between many of the Mercedes from the 60's. Prices are reasonable.

Engine have a long life, but usual checks are necessary. Control oilpressure, cold and warm, and for oilleeks. This engines are pretty oil tight. Worn engine mounts can allow the engine to move about under acceleration.

Don´t worry about noise from the camshaft and valvespring on these engines. They are not silent.

Fuel injection is reliable, but requires a properly adjusted engine.

Transmission is no problem. The final drive seldom wears out, but expensive if noisy. On earlier models there is a compensator spring above the diff. Later models has a hydro-pneumatic compensating strut. This is expensive. Many late cars has a spring fitted instead.

Bosch electrics are superior. Check for proper function. It is understandable and not as complex as the newer cars.

Suspensions are not troublesome. If worn, the car feels unsafe on the road. Check the steering damper and shock absorber for wear.

Interiors, a major part of these cars appeal. There is a lot of leather and woodwork involved. Expensive if must be replaced or restore. If re-covered, check that the car has the right pattern of leather perforations. Seats should feel hard.

Comparison

Comparison between models:

  • Coupé. The newer the car the greater value, due to bigger engines and performance
  • Convertible twice as expensive as a Coupé (220, 250 and 280)
  • 280SE 3.5 around 1,5 times the price of model with the six-cylinder engine
  • W112, ie the model 300SE, is the top model with advanced technology. More expensive to repair than the others.

Factors that influence pricing are options delivered with the car, the mileage, the number of previous owners and the car´s documentation and service history.

Not taken into consideration in the price guide below, but the importance of it can be included in the price.

Character

Perhaps not the perfect car to be used on twisty gravel roads (then you should have an M-G). Straight fine roads is to prefer.

Iin higher speeds quite noisy. But the engine sounds nice, so you may overlook it. Particularly in the cabriolet, the sound of this engine can be enjoyed to the full.

The acceleration is acceptable for a car of this age, with a phenomenally good moves from 4,000 rpm. The engine works like a dream at this speed, ie, around 120 km / hr (75 mph).

Comfortable

A graceful car that feels relaxing to drive. Wide seats that are extremely comfortable. Not to forget the back seats that are really wide. But tight for legs.

Perfection

"Expensive" classics like this car, can be prisoner of their own perfection - afraid of being used. That´s may be a problem. Engines don´t enjoy lack of use, through not putting in enough kilometers.

V8 coupés and convertibles are the type everyone wants to be owner off. Here is a jump in prices. Rich owners restore cars at costs that exceeds brand new expensive cars. Commitment of this sort has an effect on the values of all types.

Summing up

In buying situation. Trust your intuition. The first impression is vital. If you feel comfortable and have confidence in the seller. Then this could be the right object for you. Remember that the perfect car don´t exist (unless you're made of money). Later on, fix defects. Think, you buy an forty to fifty years old car to take care of. There was owners before you and there will be owners after you.

These are not over-complex cars, but condition is everything. Value for the future is stable. Few cars will reward a long term relationship like of these coupes or cabriolets.

Perhaps you find pleasure to maintain the car yourself. Otherwise look for a specialist. They is worth gold. Join an owner´s club for advice and help from other owners.

Welcome! Become a devotee owner with a classic W111 in the garage.

Zustand / Skick 2

Fahrzuge in gutem Zustand. Entweder seltener, guter, unrestaurierter Originalzustand oder fachgerecht restauriert. Technish einwandfrei mit leichten Gebrauchsspuren.

Cars in good condition. Either professionally restored or in good untouched original condition. Technical perfect with slightly signs of use. Bil i bra skick. Tekniskt felfri med lätta spår av användning. Antingen i orestaurerat originalskick eller fackmannamässigt renoverad.
Zustand / Skick 3
Fahrzeuge in gepflegtem, fahrbereitem Gebrauchszustand ohne größere technische oder optische Mängel. Well-kept cars in running condition without major technical or optical defects. Välskötta körbara bilar i brukskick utan större tekniska eller synliga brister
Zustand / Skick 4
Cars with obvious signs of use but still in running order. Technical or optical defects with the risk of hidden damage.

The table is missing Condition 1 and Condition 5th. Price Guide says that Condition 1 of the practice has no meaning, while Condition 5 refers to cars that will be ready for junkyard.
